Course Description of the 46th Nationale-Nederlanden Warsaw Marathon for People with Disabilities – A Must-Read!

We invite you to familiarize yourself with the information for persons with disabilities ahead of the 46th Nationale-Nederlanden Warsaw Marathon.

The following text provides essential details to help you prepare for the race. This article was created in collaboration with the Avalon Foundation.

PACKET PICK-UP – RACE OFFICE:

Please note that there is construction work on the Marszałkowska side in front of the Palace of Culture and Science. It’s best to approach the Race Office from the intersection of Marszałkowska Street and Jerozolimskie Avenue. The approach to the Palace of Culture and Science is cobblestone.

The entrance to the Race Office is from Marszałkowska Street. Participants with mobility impairments can access the Race Office via an elevator. The elevator for wheelchairs, located at the entrance stairs to the Palace of Culture and Science, is operated by the building’s security. After descending to level -1, you should proceed to the elevators and go up to the 4th floor.

– 8:57 AM – 46th Nationale-Nederlanden Warsaw Marathon
– 9:27 AM – Nice To Fit You Warsaw 10K

Please ensure you arrive at the starting line well in advance! There will be a dedicated warm-up session in the starting area.

Marathon Course – “Street by Street” Audit:

1. Start on Świętokrzyska Street: Turn onto Marszałkowska Street and cross tram tracks—tracks are level with the asphalt, providing a smooth passage.
2. Turn left at Dmowski Roundabout: Circle the roundabout with three crossings over tram tracks—tracks are level with the asphalt, ensuring a good passage.
3. Jerozolimskie Avenue: Good surface quality. A gentle uphill incline begins at de Gaulle Roundabout toward Poniatowski Bridge.
4. Poniatowski Bridge: Metal expansion joints across the road—well-leveled with the asphalt.
5. After the bridge: Long, gentle descent toward Waszyngton Roundabout, crossing tram tracks on al. Waszyngtona. Uneven surface near the tracks and the intersection with Saska Street.
6. Turn left through tram tracks onto Modrzewiowa Street: Tracks are level with the asphalt; narrow one-way street.
7. Cross tram tracks on Jana Zamoyskiego Street at the intersection with Zieleniecka Avenue: Tracks are level with the asphalt, but the surface quality is poorer in this area.
8. Turn from Wybrzeże Szczecińskie onto Sokoła Street: Poorer surface, with ruts in the asphalt at the edges of the road. Sokoła Street has a slight uphill incline before turning right onto Zamoście Street, which also has a slight uphill.
9. Cross tram tracks on Targowa Street: Turn right onto Zieleniecka Avenue; the surface is uneven.
10. Turn right at Waszyngton Roundabout: Cross tram tracks—tracks are level with the asphalt, but the surface is uneven.
11. Gentle incline toward Poniatowski Bridge: Followed by a downhill curve toward Wybrzeże Szczecińskie.
12. Uphill on Wybrzeże Szczecińskie near Port Praski: Followed by a downhill curve toward Okrzei Street.
13. Under Gdański Bridge: Wybrzeże Helskie transitions into Zatylnia Street with a downhill curve followed by an uphill curve.
14. Cross tram tracks on Jagiellońska Street: Tracks are level with the asphalt.
15. Twice cross tram tracks at Starzyński Roundabout: Tracks are level with the asphalt. A climb up to Gdański Bridge.
16. Gdański Bridge: Transverse expansion joints are well-leveled with the asphalt.
17. Descend from Gdański Bridge: Downhill curve.
18. Speed bumps on Pamiętajcie o Ogrodach Street: Avoidable on the left side. The street slopes downward toward the roundabout.
19. Kłopot Street: Speed bumps, avoidable by driving in the center.
20. Speed bumps along Piaskowa Street: Narrow one-way street with a slight uphill.
21. Cross tram tracks on Obozowa Street: Under Prymasa Tysiąclecia Avenue.
22. Obozowa Street: Recently renovated, with narrowing to one lane near tram stops.
23. Turn right at the intersection of Obozowa and Księcia Janusza Streets: Cross tram tracks—tracks are level with the asphalt.
24. Księcia Janusza Street: Steep uphill over a viaduct above the S8 route, followed by a steep downhill.
25. Widawska Street: Speed bump near the pedestrian crossing.
26. Wrocławska Street: Speed bumps near pedestrian crossings, avoidable by driving in the center.
27. Turn right from Wrocławska onto Powstańców Śląskich Street: Cross tram tracks.
28. Wólczyńska Street: Cross tram tracks level with the asphalt.
29. Turn from Wólczyńska onto Nocznickiego Street: Cross tram tracks—tracks are level with the asphalt.
30. Aleja gen. Marii Wittek (Maria Witek Avenue): Long uphill toward Maria Skłodowska-Curie Bridge, followed by a downhill to Marymoncka Street.
31. Marymoncka Street: At the intersection with Podleśna Street and further toward Słowackiego Street over the S8 route—several rises and falls in the terrain.
32. Słowackiego Street at the intersection with Gdańska Street: Cross tram tracks—tracks are level with the asphalt.
33. Uphill on Mickiewicza Street near Gdański Station: Followed by a downhill curve on Andersa Street.
34. Turn left from Andersa Street onto Muranowska Street: Cross tram tracks—tracks are level with the asphalt.
35. Near the Court on Krasiński Square: Speed bumps near pedestrian crossings, avoidable by driving in the center. The surface changes to cobblestones (not cobblestones, but smooth). Beware of small curbs separating the right side of the road from the bike path near pedestrian crossings.
36. Miodowa Street: Continuation of the cobblestone surface and speed bumps near pedestrian crossings.
37. Final stretch to the finish on Świętokrzyska Street: Cross Marszałkowska Street via tram tracks—tracks are level with the asphalt.

NICE TO FIT YOU WARSAW 10K COURSE – “STREET BY STREET” AUDIT:

1. Start on Świętokrzyska Street, turning onto Marszałkowska Street.
2. Turn left at Dmowski Roundabout by circling the roundabout – crossing tram tracks twice – the tracks are level with the asphalt, allowing for a smooth crossing.
3. Jerozolimskie Avenue – good surface quality. From de Gaulle Roundabout, there is a gentle uphill towards the Poniatowski Bridge.
4. On the Poniatowski Bridge, there are metal expansion joints across the road – these are well-leveled with the asphalt.
5. After the bridge, there is a long but gentle downhill towards Waszyngton Roundabout and beyond on Waszyngton Avenue, a crossing over tram tracks. The surface is uneven near the tracks and the intersection with Saska Street.
6. Kinowa Street area – a U-turn on a small curve.
7. Re-crossing the uneven surface near the exit of Saska Street and crossing the tram tracks before Waszyngton Roundabout.
8. Descent from Waszyngton Roundabout – crossing two sets of tracks that are not level with the asphalt, creating an uneven surface.
9. Long uphill with a slight incline towards the Poniatowski Bridge.
10. Re-crossing the well-leveled expansion joints on the bridge.
11. Finish – turning left from Marszałkowska Street onto Świętokrzyska Street – crossing the well-leveled tram tracks.

At the finish line of the Nice To Fit You Mini Marathon, our Little Big Runners will be greeted with commemorative medals—check them out! The Nice To Fit You Mini Marathon is a great opportunity to show the young ones that running is a fantastic hobby. The medal, shaped like a birthday cake in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the marathon in Poland, will be a wonderful keepsake along with hugs from parents and applause. Join us for the fun!

The reverse side of the medal will, of course, have space for engraving.

Children and youth will compete in various distances (tailored to their age) on Saturday, September 28th—the day before the 46th Nationale-Nederlanden Warsaw Marathon.

Registration for the Nice To Fit You Mini Marathon is now open!

The Nice To Fit You Mini Marathon eagerly awaits children and youth who want to experience the joy of sports every year. We invite you to join the Little Big Run—a race competition for the youngest participants. The races traditionally take place the day before the Great Run. See you on September 28th at the Palace of Culture and Science!

The Nice To Fit You Mini Marathon is divided into age categories, with participants running different distances based on their age. The youngest age groups—up to 3 and up to 5 years old—can start with a guardian. The upper age limit is 16 years. Everyone will receive a beautiful commemorative medal at the finish line.

The races will take place on Świętokrzyska Street, where the adults will start the following day. The starts of the respective groups are scheduled between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM—the exact start time for each age group will be announced closer to the event.

Here are the race categories and distances for the Nice To Fit You Mini Marathon:

– up to 3 years old (2021-2024) – approximately 50 meters
– 4-5 years old (2019-2020) – approximately 100 meters
– 6-7 years old (2017-2018) – approximately 150 meters
– 8-9 years old (2015-2016) – approximately 200 meters
– 10-11 years old (2013-2014) – approximately 400 meters
– 12-13 years old (2011-2012) – approximately 600 meters
– 14-16 years old (2008-2010) – approximately 1200 meters

Participants will be running with bibs that include a timing chip. You can pick up your race kit at the Palace of Culture and Science, Pl. Defilad 1, on the following dates:

– September 27, 2024 (Friday): 14:00 – 20:00
– September 28, 2024 (Saturday): 10:00 until 45 minutes before the start of your respective wave

The results of the children’s races are measured with full professionalism using an electronic timing system. On this day, young athletes will feel like professional runners. Perhaps participating in these events will be the start of a beautiful sports journey.

We invite you to cheer on the youngest participants—enthusiastic, positive support from parents and loved ones, applause, and sharing in the excitement are all vital parts of the race experience!

We’re celebrating the round anniversary of the marathon distance in Poland, which is the central theme of this year’s Big Race. The design features a symbolic laurel wreath, inspired by the one awarded to Stefan Szelestowski, the winner of the first marathon in Poland.

With over 6,000 people already on the starting list, we’re excited to see you at the start line under the Palace of Culture and Science, ready to take on a fast and flat course through seven districts! This will be your day!

You can order the T-shirt when registering for the race or add it to your existing registration. Remember, the number of T-shirts is limited.

Summary of the Marathon Distance at the Olympic Games

The men’s marathon at the XXXIII Summer Olympic Games was won by Ethiopian Tamirat Tola. With a time of 2:06:26, he broke the Olympic marathon record! The previous record was six seconds slower. The silver medal was claimed by Belgium’s Bashir Abdi with a time of 2:06:47. Completing the podium was Kenya’s Benson Kipruto, finishing at 2:07:00.

No Polish athletes competed in this event.

The women’s marathon, held on Sunday, the final day of competition in Paris, was won by Sifan Hassan, who crossed the finish line with a time of 2:22:55. The Dutch athlete of Ethiopian origin had already secured two bronze medals in the 5000m and 10000m races earlier in the Games. The second place in the marathon went to Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa, with a time of 2:22:58. The bronze medal was won by Kenya’s Hellen Obiri, who finished at 2:23:10.

Two Polish athletes also competed in the women’s marathon: Aleksandra Lisowska and Angelika Mach.

Aleksandra Lisowska finished 36th with a time of 2:31:10. Angelika Mach crossed the finish line in 64th place with a time of 2:37:56.
