Jagielska goes for a Polish age category record

Ewa Jagielska will be vying for a new Polish record in the Masters – K40 category at the Big Race! We’re rooting for her Sunday’s run! At last year’s event, Ewa secured the third place in the women’s open.

Let’s recall the 2022 results:

OPEN (WOMEN) at the 44th Warsaw Marathon (gun times):

  • Ayantu Abera Demissie (Ethiopia) 02:28:35
  • Iwona Bernardelli (Poland) 02:32:25
  • Ewa Jagielska (Poland) 02:35:46

The current National Best in W40 marathon stands at 2:34:00 and is held by Renata Kokowska.

Jagielska will take place in the team contest during the 45th Nationale-Nederlanden Warsaw Marathon – TEAM UP! Europe. She represents Team Continental, and together, they will compete for prizes in the premiere version of the marathon’s sub-competition. More about the project can be found here:

Continental team lineup:

  • Dan Nash (Great Britain – bib number M51)
  • Artur Olejarz (Poland – M52)
  • Benedetta Coliva (Italy – F51)
  • Ewa Jagielska (Poland – F52)

45th Nationale-Nederlanden Warsaw Marathon – switching the sports emotions on

Having invited runners from all over Europe to compete, we offered them a unique formula – a team competition in the marathon. From this year on, it will be as important as the struggles for individual victory, as the prizes are also quite unique. We write about such things elsewhere, here – let’s have a look at the favourites.

Who are the favourites then? Whose fight will be particularly close? At the first glance, it seems that a very strong team was lined up by Ukraine, where Olha Nyzhnyk (better known under her maiden name Skrypak) stands out with a personal best of 2:27:58. In theory, she should be a surefire favourite, but… this is a marathon. Things happen – especially that Olha returns to the marathon distance after a maternity leave.

Behind her back – though that’s mainly paper-based theory – there are several other players with big ambitions. The biggest unknown and the most serious candidate for a surprise is the Italian Benedetta Coliva, who is only 22 years old, made her debut at the royal distance in December last year and immediately gave a tour de force by winning the Pisa Marathon in 2:35:43. She is a few minutes away from the Ukrainian lady’s time, but … it’s a marathon! For us, the Italian’s absence on the podium would be a surprise, rather than her high place.

Ewa Jagielska, the only female runner from Poland in the group, ran only one second slower last year. Ewa did it in Warsaw, which gave her the third place and the satisfaction of improving her PB by… 6 minutes! Ewa Jagielska is planning an assault on the Polish record in the +40 category this year, and since together with Benedetta they are in the same crew (the multi-national Continental team), they will certainly be able to count on mutual help on the route.

And then there’s Hanna Vandenbussche from Belgium. No doubt the personal best of 2:34.44 lets her think about the podium. It’s getting tight, though, because we haven’t mentioned the second athlete from Ukraine – Maryna Nemchenko. With the result of 2:35.31, she is a perfect complement to equally fast rivals, but also … a great back-up for Olha Nyzhnyk.

What about the gentlemen?

Again, an athlete representing our eastern neighbours – Vitaliy Shafar – comes first to mind among the strongest. Shafar won the Warsaw Marathon seventeen years ago, clocking in at 2:12:26, which was then an event record. Today, he runs almost as fast and is certainly hoping to win, which would be a historic triumph. But will he succeed? Behind the favourite’s back, the tussle is going to be tight. Several runners are at the forefront, attempting to thwart the Ukrainian’s plan.

Briton Dan Nash comes to Warsaw with a result of 2:15.34, which for an amateur – and that’s what Dan calls himself – is an impressive time. 2:16.35 is the Hungarian Levente Szemerei’s PB, but it is worth noting that at the recent world championships in Budapest Levi ran only one minute slower than Poland’s Adam Nowicki – no mean feat given the tropical conditions.

It is also worth paying attention to the seemingly inconspicuous Belgian Enzo Noel, who only this year seriously took up his training and it brought him not just in the 10k national championship, but also a half-marathon PB of 1:04.12. Let’s add to this the Pole Artur Olejarz, preparing for his first serious start in the marathon, plus Belgian Yohan Zaradzki and the second Hungarian Peter Jenkei who also musn’t be discounted- and we have an interesting set of candidates, getting to grips for the podium.

And finally, who’s got a pole position as a team? Undoubtedly, the runners from Ukraine appear to be favourites, but the tussle for the second place will likely go on till last seconds. Belgium, Hungary, Team Continental – here the case seems open.

Zdrofit awards for marathoners

The 45th jubilee edition of the Nationale-Nederlanden Warsaw Marathon is an opportunity to honour outstanding athletes among the runners and also to present special awards. This is precisely what the Zdrofit brand has decided to do.

With its chain of fitness clubs, Zdrofit helps Poles engage in physical activity, which is essential for maintaining fitness, health, and physique, as well as mental well-being. All that leads to a good quality of life. The effort put into physical activity is just as important as the result itself. That’s why Zdrofit will be present at this year’s Warsaw Marathon with the slogan “NAJLEPSZE tempo to twoje własne” (“Your best pace is your own”). Progress is desirable, but you have to start somewhere! During the 45th Nationale-Nederlanden Warsaw Marathon, in addition to the main decorations, participants will have the chance to stand on the Zdrofit podium as well.

Zdrofit wants to recognise individuals who put in their effort, run for personal satisfaction, or are just beginning their running journey and are not yet among the top competitors. During the race, three people who finish beyond the middle of the field, in positions 4,501, 4,502, and 4,503, will be rewarded. Gun time*, which is not the official time, will be taken into account.

During this year’s edition of the Marathon, Zdrofit will also organise a stretching zone at the Runners’ Town. Every participant crossing the finish line will have a chance to take care of their muscles and joints, guided by highly qualified fitness instructors – Ilona Ozimek, Irina Ivchenko, and Marzena Osińska.

You will also be able to meet the Zdrofit team on the race route, where a cheering point for the brand will be set up just before the finish line on the 41st kilometer. Such support on the home stretch will undoubtedly come in handy.

We wish you the best of luck in your races!

*Gun time is the time measured from the starter’s gun to crossing the finish line. Net time is measured from the moment a participant crosses the start line to crossing the finish line.

Unique team ready to run in the Bridgestone Marathon Relay

Bridgestone has been a Global Partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games since 2014. As part of preparations for the upcoming Summer Games in Paris in 2024, they are taking up local initiatives in pursuit of their mission to support athletes and engage in charitable activities. As part of their projects in Poland, the brand is fielding a team for this year’s Bridgestone Marathon Relay, of which they are the title sponsor.

On September 24th, in the team relay on the royal distance, the Bridgestone brand will be represented by a unique bunch:

Marek Plawgo – track and field athlete, hurdler and sprinter, as well as the coordinator of the Bridgestone Olympic campaign.

“I am delighted that Bridgestone supports not just professional athletes but also all sports enthusiasts – including those who want to test their abilities in this relay. Running such a distance is a challenge that requires systematic preparation and the continuous overcoming of limitations and barriers, not only physical ones. Motivating participants and watching their achievements brings me great satisfaction.”

Grzegorz Sudoł – track and field athlete specialised in racewalking and ambassador of the B-Olympic Program, in which Bridgestone employees engage in sports and collect kilometres to provide financial support to charities.

“The relay in Warsaw is an important part of Bridgestone’s campaign related to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris in 2024, which we are all looking forward to. I am glad that I can be an ambassador for these activities. Team sports are not only about striving for victory together but also about the joy of sharing our passion with wonderful people.”

Marta Franciszczak – a beneficiary of the Rak’n’Roll Foundation, covered by the B-Olympic Program.

“Before I got sick, I used to train intensively. My passion was running in half-marathons and marathons, I also took part in extreme races. Today, I want to show that victory can have different facets. Not only the sports-related victory involving competition and the pursuit of medals but also the victory over oneself and one’s weaknesses or illness.”

We can’t wait for the start of the Bridgestone Marathon Relay.

Let’s meet on the track, enjoy running, and support each other!

The meeting with Mrs. Wanda Panfil will be held on Saturday at 3:00 PM in the Marathon Zone (Plac Defilad). Be sure to come!

The rules for competing for the Wanda Panfil Trophy are simple – the statuette is a rolling award and can finally stay with the national team after their three wins in TEAM UP! Europe. Who will win the first edition? Let’s find out on September 24th!
