Summary of the Marathon Distance at the Olympic Games

The men’s marathon at the XXXIII Summer Olympic Games was won by Ethiopian Tamirat Tola. With a time of 2:06:26, he broke the Olympic marathon record! The previous record was six seconds slower. The silver medal was claimed by Belgium’s Bashir Abdi with a time of 2:06:47. Completing the podium was Kenya’s Benson Kipruto, finishing at 2:07:00.

No Polish athletes competed in this event.

The women’s marathon, held on Sunday, the final day of competition in Paris, was won by Sifan Hassan, who crossed the finish line with a time of 2:22:55. The Dutch athlete of Ethiopian origin had already secured two bronze medals in the 5000m and 10000m races earlier in the Games. The second place in the marathon went to Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa, with a time of 2:22:58. The bronze medal was won by Kenya’s Hellen Obiri, who finished at 2:23:10.

Two Polish athletes also competed in the women’s marathon: Aleksandra Lisowska and Angelika Mach.

Aleksandra Lisowska finished 36th with a time of 2:31:10. Angelika Mach crossed the finish line in 64th place with a time of 2:37:56.
